The Challenge

How might we encourage people to eat balanced meals on time, because they often forget, get busy, and end up eating whatever is available, which is often unhealthy?

Research & Discovery

I conducted user interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I was designing for. Two primary user groups emerged from this research:

  1. Busy Professionals: Individuals with hectic schedules who struggle to find time for meal planning and often resort to convenience foods.
  2. Family Meal Planners: Married individuals who are responsible for preparing family meals and often feel stuck or uninspired about what to cook.

Key Pain Points

People are often unsure what to eat when they get hungry, leading to decision fatigue.
There's a lack of practical knowledge about what constitutes a balanced meal.
Traditional paper-based meal timetables are easily lost or damaged and offer no reminders.

User Personas

User Persona 2: The Family Meal Planner

The Solution

The solution is a meal planning app, Everymeal, that empowers users to create and follow a healthy eating schedule. It specifically addresses the pain points by providing:

  • Smart Meal Planner: Helps users create balanced meal plans effortlessly.
  • Timely Reminders: Notifies users when it's time to eat, helping them stay on track even on busy days.
  • Nutritional Guidance: Ensures the meals users plan are balanced and meet their dietary needs.

We will measure effectiveness by tracking user engagement, feedback, and the number of meal plans created and followed.

Usability Study & Key Findings

After creating low-fidelity wireframes, a second round of usability studies provided fresh insights that directly informed the design decisions. Users requested several key features:

  • Users want to see the date and time clearly displayed on the timetable screen.
  • Users need the flexibility to choose between a 2-meal or 3-meal per day plan.
  • Users are interested in a blog or tips section for guidance on how to use the app effectively and learn more about nutrition.

The Impact

The app is designed to directly combat unhealthy eating habits by making nutritious meal planning accessible and easy to follow. By providing structure and timely reminders, Everymeal raises awareness for healthy eating and empowers users to make better dietary choices, ultimately helping to reduce illnesses that arise from inadequate nutrition.
